McLaren has confirmed that they are working on building a new SUV after years of speculation. Earlier this week, the British marque made the announcement in the presence of UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham at McLaren's headquarters in southern England.
A NEW ERA Precise details surrounding the new supercar remain sparse. It is expected to focus less on performance and speed, but instead emphasise comfort, luxury, and practicality. Furthermore, it will most likely be a hybrid with either a V6 or V8 paired to several electric motors. We still have no idea as to what its name could be, but it will launch to the public by 2028 with a starting price of around $450,000.
It comes as McLaren announced huge new investment in preparation for greater demand driven by this new SUV. In total, by 2032 they will invest over £500 million into developing both new and existing production sites across the UK. Developments include a new carbon plant in northern England, a testing facility near Birmingham, and further developments to the McLaren Technology Center in southern England.
The supercar will directly compete on the market with the likes of the Lamborghini Urus, Ferrari Purosangue, Bentley Bentayga, and Aston Martin DBX among others.
STRUGGLING ARTURA While things may seem to be good for McLaren, not all is well in some areas of the business; namely, the Artura. The supercar started out in life with a difficult start - numerous delays were caused by supply chain issues and various technical faults. After four years on sale, things are not looking great.
Recent reports indicate a drastic drop in demand for the Artura from customers and a flurry of complaints. McLaren are expected to drop the Artura soon in favour of a new model: the "P34". The "P34" is expected to be a V6 hybrid with more of an emphasis on long-distance driving and luxury.
