The Ferrari 296 marked a major change for Ferrari, replacing the traditional mid-engined V8 formula with a V6 hybrid setup. Despite the smaller engine, it was praised for keeping Ferrari's character while delivering a huge leap in performance and technology, and it later formed a base for the more extreme Ferrari 296 Speciale. Ferrari offered the 296 as either a GTB - which is a coupé - or the GTS - which has a retractable roof. Both variants share the same technical characteristics.
