The Ferrari 296 marked a major change for Ferrari, replacing the traditional mid-engined V8 formula with a V6 hybrid setup. Despite the smaller engine, it was praised for keeping Ferrari's character while delivering a huge leap in performance and technology, and it later formed a base for the more extreme Ferrari 296 Speciale. Ferrari offered the 296 as either a GTB - which is a coupé - or the GTS - which has a retractable roof. Both variants share the same technical characteristics.

The 296 Speciale is the track-focused evolution of the 296 GTB, with more power, less weight, and substantially increased downforce. It was developed to deliver sharper responses and greater aerodynamic performance, with revised brakes, suspension, and electronics. An "A" (Aperta) variant is also offered - with a retractable roof; it retains the same technical characteristics as the coupé version.

296 GT Modificata
The 296 GT Modificata is an unrestricted, non-competitive track evolution of the 296 GT3 Evo, effectively allowing Ferrari to exploit the GT3 platform without racing regulations holding it back. It adds significantly more power, redesigned aerodynamics and upgraded brakes, and Ferrari says it can lap Fiorano around three seconds faster than the 296 GT3 Evo. Unlike the road-going 296s, it has no hybrid system.
