Michael Jordan’s 1997 Ferrari 550 Maranello is going up for sale, giving collectors the chance to own a car closely linked to one of basketball’s biggest names. The Ferrari is being offered through auction platform JOOPITER, with an estimated value of between $700,000 and $1.3 million.
A CHAMPIONSHIP SUPERCAR Finished in Rosso Barchetta with a tan leather interior, the Ferrari was delivered to Jordan in May 1997, during the Chicago Bulls’ dominant run in the NBA. Jordan used the car regularly and was famously photographed leaving the United Center in it after the Bulls won their fifth championship. The car was also fitted with the Illinois registration “MJ 5”, linking it directly to Jordan and his five championships at the time.
SNEAKER INSPIRATION The 550 Maranello also played a role in sneaker history. Designer Tinker Hatfield took inspiration from the Ferrari when creating the Air Jordan XIV, including details influenced by the car’s vents, tyres and Ferrari-style badge. Jordan later wore the Air Jordan XIV during the 1998 NBA Finals.
V12 POWER The 550 Maranello is powered by a naturally aspirated 5.5-litre V12 producing 485 horsepower, paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. Jordan sold the car in 2002, after which it spent years in a private collection before recently resurfacing. Its combination of Ferrari performance, Michael Jordan ownership and links to Air Jordan history could make it one of the most notable celebrity-owned Ferraris to hit the market this year.
